Graphite Thrust Washers for Forklift Steering Knuckles

Forklift steering knuckle thrust washers provide a specified axial sliding contact near the kingpin. A graphite-plugged copper-alloy washer can be assessed where the axle design uses that construction. It is a bearing component rather than a sealing washer or a complete steering-axis bearing set.

Identify the loaded axial face within the kingpin stack

Steering changes the relative position of the loaded faces while the axle transmits vehicle loads. Contact area, face condition and load reversals influence the washer duty. Vehicle carrying capacity alone does not define the load on an individual thrust face. Dirt entry and damage to a mating face can shorten the useful life of a replacement.

Dimensions and operating data for quotation

Selection boundaries and installation

Clean and inspect both mating faces and the kingpin support. Seat the washer on the intended backing surface and confirm which face moves. Retain the original approved axial stack or an approved revision. Do not use an oversized washer to compensate for unrelated wear or missing components.

Material and replacement approval

For copper-alloy parts, state the exact standard and grade required by the design. JDB/500# and geometry codes do not establish chemical composition. Do not treat different national alloy designations as interchangeable without checking their specifications. Product colour and a reused image cannot confirm material. Required documentation, dimensions and manufacturing scope are reviewed with the quotation.

Agree the material, counterface, operating clearance and acceptance criteria before approving a replacement. Include any required dimensional inspection, material documentation or sample review with the RFQ so it can be addressed in the quotation.

Purchasing questions

Can forklift rated capacity determine the washer size?

No. Provide the steering-axle load case and the actual axial reaction at the washer.

Does the washer also guide the kingpin radially?

A thrust washer addresses axial face contact. Radial guidance is a separate bearing position.

Can a steel shim replace the graphite washer?

Not solely from matching thickness. Contact material, lubrication, wear and the complete axle design must be reviewed.

Can the original product image be used to approve this application?

No. It illustrates the bearing structure. Use the approved part and assembly drawings to confirm dimensions, material, clearance and duty.
