SF-1 PTFE Composite Split Bushings for Vacuum-Chamber Lid Hinges

For an SF-1 PTFE composite split bushing proposed in a vacuum-chamber lid hinge, first establish whether the bearing is outside or inside the vacuum boundary. Dry-running capability does not establish vacuum compatibility. Specify the exact composite, cleaning and assembly condition, then review mechanical motion, gas release and wear particles as separate acceptance questions.

Locate the hinge relative to the vacuum boundary

An external hinge can support a chamber lid while remaining in room air. An internal pivot, or a bearing connected to the evacuated volume through a passage, presents a different materials and gas-load problem. Mark the seal line and the evacuated surfaces on the assembly section before requesting a “vacuum bushing”.

GGB documents a branded DU® application that lifts and pivots a vacuum-system cover and uses self-adjusting housings to accommodate installation alignment.[1] The case establishes that cover motion is a real bearing application. It does not establish the pressure exposure of every hinge surface, qualify a generic SF-1 formulation or describe a BONIU customer installation.

For the proposed sleeve, specify backing, intermediate layer, PTFE-based formulation and outside finish. SF-1 is not a single universal vacuum material specification. Do not infer composition, lead-free status, baking limits or outgassing certification from the name or outside plating colour.

Use the right evidence for each acceptance question

Vacuum hinge evidence is not one test
QuestionRelevant evidenceWhat it does not prove
Can the hinge support and move the lid?Installed fit, alignment, contact loads and motion/torque checksLow gas release or particle cleanliness
What volatile material is released?Traceable material outgassing data with specimen and conditioning detailsDynamic wear or final chamber pressure by itself
Can trapped pockets evacuate?Assembly section and a reviewed venting/conductance arrangementA low-volatility material formulation
Will motion contaminate the process?Representative cycling and particle/cleanliness acceptanceA stationary material mass-loss result
Will the chamber meet its process requirement?Approved assembled pumpdown, leak and cleanliness checksAutomatic approval of every future material substitution

The distinctions are useful even when only the lid mechanism is being purchased. An atmospheric hinge may mainly require grease migration and particle-control measures, while a vacuum-exposed bearing adds gas-load and conditioning questions. Keep the required scope proportional to the actual location.

Read outgassing results with their specimen definition

NASA’s Goddard user guide describes total mass loss (TML) and collected volatile condensable material (CVCM) as different measured quantities. In its described apparatus, specimens are exposed for 24 hours at 125°C while the collector is held at 25°C; conditioning and specimen identification are part of the data.[2]

These are source test conditions, not a recommended bake cycle for an SF-1 bushing. A supplier report should identify the exact formulation, specimen construction, manufacturing or curing history where applicable, cleaning, conditioning and test method. Confirm whether the tested sample was a lining, composite strip, finished sleeve or another material.

The denominator matters. A percentage based on a lining sample is not automatically comparable with the same percentage reported for a heavier metal-backed specimen. Do not dilute, rescale or transfer a result to a different finished bearing without an agreed technical basis. A reference to “PTFE tested” is insufficient when the supplied component includes additives, metal layers, surface treatments or assembly residues.

TML and CVCM are not a pressure rating and do not directly give the gas throughput during the intended operating cycle. The chamber designer must set the relevant acceptance criteria. BONIU vacuum or outgassing qualification is not claimed here.

Inspect trapped volumes and wear paths separately

Leybold distinguishes apparent or virtual leaks associated with gas released from cavities, blind holes and joints.[3] Apply that assembly-level question to a vacuum-exposed hinge pocket, shoulder, fastener and surrounding housing: is there a restricted volume that must evacuate? A wrapped sleeve’s visible seam is not proof of an adequate vent path.

Venting changes belong on the approved design. Do not drill the bearing, remove supporting lands or alter a fastener to improvise a gas path. Any vented geometry must retain the required bearing support, strength and fit.

Sliding wear introduces another route for contamination. Identify where debris could fall or migrate relative to sensitive optics, substrates or seals. If the bearing is external, check whether residues or particles can be carried into the chamber when the lid opens. Low outgassing alone does not qualify particle generation during repeated operation.

Preserve cleanliness and installed motion together

  • Specify lid mass, hinge geometry, support spacing, any counterbalance, angular travel and operating cycles. Use calculated hinge reactions rather than dividing lid weight equally by the number of sleeves.
  • Inspect pin and housing alignment; do not expect a straight split sleeve to provide the articulation of a self-aligning housing.
  • Use the approved fit and installation tool, protect the PTFE-based surface and check the installed bore. Do not ream or scrape the lining without specific approval.
  • Agree cleaning solvents, drying, handling, packaging and any bake procedure for every material in the assembly. A generic bearing temperature limit is not a vacuum-cleaning prescription.
  • Do not add ordinary grease to cure stiff motion. Review alignment, fit, lubricant permission and contamination requirements before changing the assembly condition.
  • Define representative cycling, pumpdown and cleanliness checks where required. Compare results in the same assembled and conditioned state.

A useful procurement release records both the component specification and the conditions under which the lid mechanism was accepted. Retain the approved formulation and process identity when ordering repeat parts.

Frequently asked questions

Does dry running mean suitable for vacuum?

No. Mechanical sliding, gas release, particles and process compatibility are separate requirements for the actual assembly.

Does a vacuum-system cover case prove the bushing is inside vacuum?

No. Locate the bearing and seal on the assembly section. A cover can use external atmospheric bearings.

Can I use 125°C as the bushing bake temperature?

Not from this guide. It is a described NASA test condition; the full material and assembly need an approved cleaning and bake procedure.

Will a low CVCM value prove the chamber reaches its target pressure?

No. The result concerns collected condensables under a defined material test. Chamber pressure depends on the complete gas load, leaks, pumping arrangement and operating conditions.
