C95400 Aluminium-Bronze Sleeve Bushings for Valve Bonnet Stem Guides
A C95400 aluminium-bronze sleeve for a valve’s bonnet stem guide must be specified by its guiding function, material condition, installed fit and hot-to-cold clearance. C95400 alone does not approve a pressure class, packing system or process medium. Confirm that the original valve design calls for this type of metallic guide before requesting manufacture.
This guide concerns a drawing-defined sleeve that guides a sliding stem. It does not describe the stem nut, a sealing ring or the valve’s pressure-retaining body. BONIU can review a component enquiry; supply of a complete valve, OEM authorisation or certified service capability is not implied.
Identify the guide before selecting its alloy
| Component | Main function | What the drawing must identify |
|---|---|---|
| Bonnet stem-guide sleeve | Supports and aligns the specified stem sliding interface | Guide position, side reaction, stem pairing, bore, fit and lubrication or process exposure. |
| Packing or guide ring within a packing set | Works as part of a defined sealing and guiding assembly | Original packing construction, component materials, sequence and valve-maker instructions. |
| Stem nut or yoke sleeve | Transfers actuator torque or axial motion through threads | Thread geometry, load, lubrication and original nut material. |
| Pressure-retaining body or bonnet | Contains the pressure boundary | Applicable valve design code, approved materials, inspection and pressure qualification. |
Emerson’s sliding-stem packing bulletin shows guide bushings within particular engineered packing arrangements. Those diagrams demonstrate why the surrounding assembly matters; they do not specify C95400 for the illustrated bushings or approve a bronze replacement.
[1]Release C95400 by product standard and condition
Concast’s producer sheet identifies C95400 as aluminium bronze and references ASTM B505/B505M-23 for its continuous-cast material data. Its selected chemistry includes aluminium 10.00–11.50% and iron 3.00–5.00%; the full limits, total-element requirement and footnotes still apply. It also notes a heat-treated supply option.
[2]Specify UNS C95400, the applicable product standard and edition, casting route and required condition. A heat-treated reference and an as-supplied condition must not be merged into one property claim. Request the material documentation and inspection scope needed for the actual order.
Do not translate the trade name “aluminium bronze” into an automatic equivalent such as C95800, C95500 or CuAl10Ni5Fe5. Compare the complete composition and product requirements before substitution. A producer’s material-property table does not establish the finished guide’s pressure, sliding speed or temperature limit.
Hot-stem transients can govern the clearance question
A clearance check must include the temperatures of the stem, bush and supporting housing. The following original calculation illustrates free thermal expansion only. Assume a 30.000 mm stem and a 30.060 mm free guide bore at 20°C, giving 0.060 mm diametral clearance.
For illustration, use the C95400 expansion coefficient 15.5 × 10⁻⁶/K over 20–300°C reported in the Concast sheet. Assume a stem coefficient of 17 × 10⁻⁶/K solely as a calculation input; it does not identify or certify a particular stainless-steel grade.
[2]| Assumed thermal case | Linear expansion model | Calculated diametral gap |
|---|---|---|
| Both parts at the reference temperature | 30.060 − 30.000 | 0.0600 mm |
| Stem and free bush both rise by 180 K | 30.060(1 + 15.5×10⁻⁶×180) − 30.000(1 + 17×10⁻⁶×180) | About 0.0521 mm |
| Stem rises by 180 K; free bush rises by 80 K | 30.060(1 + 15.5×10⁻⁶×80) − 30.000(1 + 17×10⁻⁶×180) | About 0.0055 mm |
The last result shows sensitivity to unequal temperatures; it is not a recommended running gap. The model omits the press fit, housing restraint, temperature gradients within each part, tolerances, deposits, elastic deformation and surface condition. In a real bonnet these effects can change both size and shape. Review the constrained assembly before specifying cold clearance.
State diametral versus radial clearance explicitly. Include worst-case shaft and installed-bore limits, measurement temperature and the operating transient. A cold free-bush measurement cannot by itself confirm hot installed freedom of movement.
Review process exposure and lubrication as separate decisions
Identify whether the sleeve is wetted by process fluid, exposed only to leakage or located outside the process boundary. Provide fluid composition, concentration, pressure, temperature, solids and cleaning conditions. General corrosion resistance is insufficient to approve every chemical, seawater or steam duty.
A plain C95400 sleeve has no embedded graphite plugs or polymer liner. Confirm the intended lubricant or process-lubricated arrangement from the valve design. Do not infer dry-running suitability from the material name, and do not add graphite plugs as a repair shortcut.
Keep stem-guide lubrication, packing preparation and fastener anti-seize instructions separate. Emerson’s cited bulletin distinguishes lubrication instructions for specific packing systems and their studs and nuts. This is product-specific guidance, not a universal instruction to grease a valve bore.
[1]Where emissions, oxygen cleanliness, potable-water use or another approval matters, specify the required finished-assembly qualification and documents. A raw-alloy reference or supplier statement about its own stock does not establish BONIU certification.
Inspect alignment and retain the original design limits
Supply the stem and bonnet datums, guide-seat dimensions, installed-bore limits and axial retention. Check how the bush is seated, whether the fit changes the bore and whether the support remains coaxial with the stem’s other guides. Do not use a sleeve fit to pull a bent stem into alignment.
Inspect stem straightness, diameter profile, coating, scratches and deposits before reusing it. Check the housing for ovality or previous repair. Preserve the required entry chamfer and use tooling that does not burr the sliding bore or distort the sleeve.
For a replacement, distinguish original dimensions from wear measurements. Set the accepted clearance, stem travel, actuation effort and leak checks using the valve maker’s approved procedure. Binding can involve packing, deposits, actuator alignment and thermal distortion as well as the guide itself. Agree any proposed grade or clearance change before production.
Frequently asked questions
Is a C95400 valve guide a pressure-rated valve body?
No. A guide sleeve and a pressure-retaining body have different functions and acceptance requirements. A material reference for one does not assign a pressure class or certification to the other.
Can C95400 replace CuAl10Ni5Fe5 or C95800?
No automatic substitution is established. Compare the complete alloy limits, product form, condition and valve requirements, then obtain approval from the responsible designer.
Can the bore simply be enlarged when a valve sticks?
First inspect alignment, stem damage, deposits, packing and the thermal condition. A larger clearance can impair guidance or the surrounding seal arrangement; use the approved valve limits.
Does the example establish a high-temperature rating?
No. It only demonstrates dimensional sensitivity under stated assumptions. It does not assess strength at temperature, corrosion, pressure containment, lubrication or the actual constrained fit.
Request a drawing review
Send the valve section identifying the guide, approved sleeve and stem drawings, exact alloy and condition, product standard, housing fit, installed clearance, cold and transient temperatures of the parts, medium exposure, lubrication, retention, quantity and inspection requirements.
Send your drawing for review or email sales@boniubushing.com. BONIU reviews manufacturing feasibility, material availability, documentation and quotation scope for the particular enquiry. This guide does not confirm stock, a certified material batch or approval for a named machine.
