C95800 vs C95500 Nickel-Aluminium Bronze Shaft Sleeves for Seawater Pumps

For a seawater-pump shaft sleeve, specify the component function and the original material requirement before choosing C95800, C95500 or an EN nickel-aluminium bronze. These are separate material references. A corrosion-resistant sleeve protecting a shaft is not automatically a suitable journal bearing, and an alloy name alone does not establish dry-running capability.

This guide addresses replacement enquiries for existing pump designs. It provides a material and drawing-review framework; it does not declare that BONIU stocks a particular pump sleeve or that a proposed alloy is approved for a named pump.

First identify what the pump sleeve actually does

Three similar-looking parts, three different acceptance questions
Part and motionFunction to confirmDrawing information that matters
Shaft-protection sleeve; rotates with the shaftProtects a shaft region from seal, packing or fluid exposure. It is not itself the stationary journal bearing.Seal or packing contact diameter, surface finish, shaft fit, axial retention, sealing faces and runout.
Stationary bearing bush; shaft rotates insideSupports a journal through its specified lubricant or process-fluid film.Mounted clearance, shaft material and finish, alignment, lubricant supply, starts and radial reactions.
Pump wear ring; stationary or rotating according to designControls internal leakage at a designed running gap. It is not a substitute name for either sleeve above.Mating ring, concentricity, operating gap, retention and the pump maker’s anti-rub requirements.

The table is an engineering classification for preparing an enquiry. Confirm terminology against the assembly drawing: a photograph of a hollow cylinder and its outside diameter cannot establish its function. Ask which component moves, which surface contacts the fluid and what the opposing part is.

C95800 and C95500 are not the same grade

The producer references below provide a quick chemistry screen. Values are selected weight-percent limits, not a complete specification or BONIU material-test results.

Selected chemistry from Wieland Concast’s ASTM B505/B505M-23 reference
GradeAluminiumNickelIronImportant qualification
C95800[1]8.50–9.50%4.00–5.00%3.50–4.50%The producer states that Fe must not exceed Ni; Ni includes Co.
C95500[2]10.00–11.50%3.00–5.50%3.00–5.00%Ni includes Co. Other elements and total-element requirements also apply.

A useful rejection check: the displayed aluminium intervals do not overlap. A heat reported at 9.0% Al cannot meet the displayed C95500 aluminium requirement; a heat at 10.5% Al cannot meet the displayed C95800 requirement. This is an inference from the source limits, not an approval of either heat against all remaining requirements.

Concast distinguishes C95800 as-cast or temper-annealed supply and separately identifies heat-treated C95500 options.[1][2] Specify the required product standard, edition, casting route and delivery condition. A grade designation does not, by itself, select the treatment or establish the finished component’s corrosion performance.

How to handle CuAl10Ni5Fe5 and CC333G enquiries

Schreier identifies the EN cast reference as CuAl10Fe5Ni5-C / CC333G and lists C95800 and C95500 as similar materials. Its selected EN reference ranges are Al 8.5–10.5%, Ni 4.0–6.0% and Fe 4.0–5.5%.[3] “Similar” is a comparison aid, not a declaration of interchangeable purchase specifications.

If an enquiry says CuAl10Ni5Fe5, preserve that wording and ask for the controlling standard and full designation. Do not silently convert a cast CC grade into a wrought CW grade. Review the original drawing, material condition, chemistry, mechanical requirements and inspection terms before accepting an alternative.

The BONIU CuAl10Ni5Fe5 material reference explains the naming used on this site. Use it to frame a drawing review; confirm actual supply scope for the particular enquiry.

Build a service description, not just a “marine” label

Schreier describes CC333G corrosion resistance in seawater, but also states that sliding applications require good lubrication.[3] This is a material reference, not a universal seawater-pump bearing rating. The following review questions are engineering analysis for the assembly owner.

Locate the wetted and sliding surfaces

Mark whether seawater reaches the sleeve bore, outside surface, ends or only the adjacent casing. Identify the shaft, seal or packing, fasteners and nearby metals. For a fixed protective sleeve, review sealing and retention as well as external finish. For a bearing bush, establish how its running interface receives lubricant before the shaft is loaded.

Describe water quality and shutdowns

Provide salinity or chloride information, temperature, suspended solids, chemical dosing, cleaning agents and evidence of polluted water. Include long stagnant shutdowns and the flushing or preservation procedure. “Seawater” does not distinguish clean intake water from a solids-bearing or chemically treated stream.

Separate corrosion resistance from rub tolerance

Record speed, starts per hour, reverse rotation if possible, dry-start risk and any history of rubbing. A sleeve that remains intact in the fluid may still damage its mating part if alignment, finish or running clearance is wrong. Do not infer an acceptable dry-running duration from a corrosion description.

Define fit, finish and inspection by function

Keep the sleeve-to-shaft retention fit separate from any running gap to a stationary component. Identify cold assembly conditions and operating temperatures for both parts; the required fit must remain suitable over that range. No generic interference or bearing-clearance value is assigned here.

  • Geometry: define datum axes, concentricity or runout requirements, shoulders, end faces, seals and retention details.
  • Contact finish: state which surface runs against packing, a seal or a bearing, and obtain the corresponding finish and hardness requirements from the equipment design.
  • Assembly: use the maker’s installation procedure and approved tooling. Support the component correctly; protect finished lands and align any required fluid passages.
  • Final checks: verify the installed dimensions and runout relevant to the part’s function, rather than relying only on its free-state inspection.

Do not copy an installation-heating temperature from another alloy or machine. Confirm any heating, cooling, adhesive, key or locking arrangement against the drawing. Repaired shafts and worn seats need measured limits before the replacement sleeve is manufactured.

Make two pump-sleeve quotations comparable

Request the required document format explicitly. An offer of a generic material certificate is incomplete until its grade, batch traceability and required results are agreed. Documents and manufacturing feasibility must be confirmed for the actual order.

Frequently asked questions

Can C95500 replace C95800 in a seawater-pump sleeve?

Not on the grade names alone. Their displayed aluminium limits differ. The equipment owner must review the complete material specification, delivery condition, dimensions, fluid exposure and mating components before approving a change.

Does nickel-aluminium bronze need grease?

The lubrication method belongs to the component design. A stationary bush, a rotating protective sleeve and a wear ring have different interfaces. Follow the specified fluid or lubricant system; do not add grease to a process-fluid circuit without approval.

Is CC333G the European name for both US grades?

No unconditional equivalence is established. Compare each full specification separately, including casting versus wrought product form and the required acceptance tests.

Can a worn sleeve serve as the only manufacturing sample?

It can help identify geometry, but wear may have changed the critical surfaces. Supply the assembly drawing or agree how the original dimensions, fits and material will be recovered and approved.

Request a seawater-pump sleeve drawing review

Send the sleeve and assembly drawings, original grade and standard, shaft and mating-part limits, fluid details, speed, temperature, quantity and inspection requirements. Mark whether the part is a protective sleeve, bearing bush or wear ring.

Send drawings for review or email sales@boniubushing.com. BONIU will confirm manufacturing scope, material availability and quotation requirements after reviewing the enquiry.
