C95800 Nickel-Aluminium-Bronze Wear Rings for Seawater Pump Impellers

For a C95800 nickel-aluminium-bronze wear ring in a seawater centrifugal pump, specify the rotating and stationary ring pair, the installed running gap and the complete rotor-clearance budget. The alloy designation alone cannot establish an acceptable gap, resistance to rubbing or pump efficiency. Begin with the pump maker’s repair drawing and the measured casing and rotor condition.

This guide concerns the annular leakage-control interface around an impeller. It addresses an existing wear-ring arrangement or an explicitly approved redesign. It does not qualify a shaft-bearing sleeve or a mechanical-seal sleeve for the same duty.

Identify both sides of the running interface

Mark which ring rotates, which remains in the casing and which dimensions are measured after retention. A ring may be a replaceable component or run against an integral mating surface. The purchase drawing must describe that actual arrangement. Include the counterpart alloy, surface condition, axial overlap and any stepped or grooved geometry.

Concast identifies C95800 as nickel-aluminium bronze and publishes continuous-cast material information with an ASTM B505/B505M-23 reference. This establishes a material reference, not a pump wear-ring operating envelope.

Separate diametral clearance from available radial space

KSB explains that clearance-gap sizing depends on thermal changes, bearing arrangements, cavitation and contamination. Its lexicon also discusses impeller-tip gaps; those example dimensions must not be transplanted into a cylindrical wear-ring repair.

[2]

The following original geometry example uses assumed cold dimensions only. It is a screening exercise, not a recommended pump clearance. Suppose the installed stationary bore is 100.60 mm and the rotating diameter is 100.00 mm. The diametral difference is 0.60 mm, so the nominal radial gap is 0.30 mm.

Illustrative local radial-gap budget
QuantityAssumption or calculationResult
Cold radial gap(100.60 − 100.00) / 20.30 mm
Geometric eccentricityAssumed 0.08 mm TIR / 20.04 mm
Additional relative radial movementAssumed conservative co-directional displacement0.10 mm
Remaining geometric space0.30 − 0.04 − 0.100.16 mm before other effects

The TIR-to-eccentricity conversion assumes a circular surface with pure eccentricity. Lobing, taper and measurement error cannot be reduced that way. The added movement assumes the worst directions coincide; do not add the same deflection twice if it is already included in a measured envelope.

Temperature, casing distortion, debris and transient rotor motion still require separate review. A positive result in this simplified budget does not establish safe operation. A repair dimension should come from the designer’s complete assessment and the applicable pump requirements.

Release the material pair and supply condition

Keep C95800, C95500 and CuAl10Ni5Fe5 as separate designations until the exact standards, chemistry limits, product form, condition and inspection terms have been compared. A commercial comparison chart is insufficient approval for substitution. Identify the ring stock route and any treatment on the purchase order.

Review the seawater chemistry, solids, temperature, shutdown exposure and adjacent metallic components with the pump designer. Do not infer universal corrosion immunity or dry-running capability from the alloy family. Where a drawing specifies a hardness relationship or a particular mating combination, retain that requirement until an alternative is approved.

Do not copy a bronze datasheet’s tensile value into a permissible rub load. The moving interface, local contact, cooling and rotor dynamics need application-specific evaluation. This guide makes no numerical erosion, temperature or seawater-velocity claim for a BONIU ring.

Inspect the installed geometry before authorising the repair

Record the removed ring, mating surface, casing seat and rotor datums before machining. Identify fretting, loose seats, scoring and local rub marks separately. Preserve their circumferential positions so that a dimensional problem can be related to the assembly rather than hidden by replacing one ring.

Use the approved retention procedure and insertion tooling. Check seat damage, entry features and axial seating. Retention can change roundness and bore size, so a free-state ring measurement is not the final acceptance of the running surface. Define whether any finish machining occurs in the installed condition.

After assembly, inspect the specified bore and rotating diameter, their datum relationship, runout, overlap and clearances through the permitted axial range. Confirm rotor freedom using the pump maker’s procedure. Add the required operating verification after restoration; a hand rotation check alone does not reproduce hot or hydraulic loading.

Keep the pump’s fluid and start-up requirements

The handled liquid participates in the wear-ring operating environment. Preserve the pump’s specified priming, venting, cooling and minimum-flow procedures. Do not add grease, graphite plugs or an improvised lubricant groove to a pump wear ring without an approved design change.

Define maintenance triggers from the maker’s dimensional limits and pump performance criteria. A larger gap can be associated with leakage changes, but an efficiency gain cannot be promised from an alloy change alone. Inspect and correct the reason for recurring contact or seat movement before repeating the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy the running gap from another pump?

Use the exact pump design and repair limits. Diameter, retention, counterpart, bearing arrangement, temperatures and fluid conditions can differ.

Does 0.60 mm diametral clearance mean 0.60 mm radial clearance?

For concentric cylindrical surfaces, 0.60 mm diametral difference gives 0.30 mm radial space. Eccentricity changes the local gap.

Can C95500 be supplied as a direct substitute?

Only after an approved material and application review. The nickel-aluminium-bronze family name does not establish unconditional interchangeability.
