Graphite-Plugged Bushings for Steel Mills
Solutions / Steel mills and metallurgy
Graphite-plugged bushings for steel mills are candidates for slow pivots and sliding mechanisms where a copper-alloy bearing with solid lubricant is specified. BONIU BEARING reviews drawing-based sleeves, flanged parts and thrust washers for metallurgical equipment. Define the bearing location and measured operating conditions before confirming suitability.
A furnace linkage, caster guide mechanism and high-speed rolling-mill shaft do not share one bearing duty. Heat, water and scale exposure also vary by location. This page addresses drawing-based plain-bearing components; it does not treat a graphite-plugged sleeve as a general replacement for a mill’s main rotating bearings.
Application positions and bearing choices
| Position | Product family to review | Critical enquiry details |
|---|---|---|
| Rolling-mill auxiliary pivot | Graphite-plugged straight or flanged bushing | Peak load, working angle and surrounding scale |
| Continuous-casting guide mechanism | Drawing-based copper-alloy bushing | Bearing temperature, movement pattern and cooling-water exposure |
| Furnace-side linkage | Solid-lubricant bushing subject to material review | Actual interface temperature, heat shielding and dwell time |
| Slow axial support | Graphite-plugged thrust washer | Axial force, sliding area, counterface and retention |
Material, fit and operating conditions
For a self-lubricating bronze bushing for a rolling mill, specify the alloy by grade and condition. Select the base alloy and plug formulation together. The steel process temperature is not the bearing-interface temperature. If the part sees water spray or corrosive media, explain its chemistry and wet-dry cycle so both alloy compatibility and counterface corrosion can be reviewed.
Assembly requirements
Solid lubricant does not eliminate the need to inspect contamination, fit and wear. Maximum load, speed and temperature figures must not be combined as if all could occur together. Any proposed material limit must refer to the actual grade and operating regime.
Compare the specified alloy with our brass and bronze grade information. Send a required grade or standard explicitly; similar alloy names do not establish automatic equivalence.

What to send for a quotation
- Part and assembly drawings with bearing location identified
- Normal and peak loads, speed or oscillation, and duty cycle
- Measured bearing temperature and heat-soak conditions
- Scale, dust, water spray, chemicals and existing protection
- Shaft finish, housing fit, quantity and material verification needs
We review drawings or samples before confirming material, dimensions, availability and lead time. Agree first-article and inspection requirements at the enquiry stage so both sides use the same acceptance criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Are graphite-plugged bushings suitable for every high-temperature steel-mill position?
No. Suitability depends on the copper alloy, solid lubricant, counterface, actual temperature and load-speed duty. Identify the location before selecting the part.
Can you make a custom steel-mill pivot bushing?
We review custom enquiries from drawings or samples. State any split geometry, retention or special inspection requirement so manufacturability can be confirmed.
Does a graphite thrust washer carry the same duty as a sleeve?
No. A sleeve uses a radial projected bearing area; a washer carries axial load over a face. The contact geometry and wear pairing need a separate review.
