Bronze Bushings for Hydropower and Water Gates
Solutions / Hydropower and water gates
Bronze bushings for hydropower gates require a review of water exposure, static load and slow movement. BONIU BEARING accepts drawing-based enquiries for copper-alloy pivot bushings and thrust washers used in gate or linkage assemblies. Material and lubricant suitability are confirmed for the specified environment rather than assumed from a generic graphite-bushing description.
A gate can remain loaded and stationary for long periods, then move only during an operating test or flood event. The enquiry should describe breakaway duty as well as normal travel. Submerged, splash-zone and dry gate components need different corrosion and lubricant-compatibility checks.
Application positions and bearing choices
| Position | Product family to review | Critical enquiry details |
|---|---|---|
| Radial-gate trunnion or pivot | Custom copper-alloy sleeve | Static and operating loads, alignment, water exposure and retention |
| Sluice-gate or lock-gate linkage | Drawing-based pivot bushing | Movement frequency, contaminated water and shaft corrosion |
| Wicket-gate operating linkage | Copper-alloy bushing subject to approval | Oscillation, breakaway torque and specified bearing material |
| Gate-hinge axial interface | Thrust washer where specified | Axial contact area, installation clearance and water conditions |
Material, fit and operating conditions
For a self-lubricating bushing for a water gate, specify freshwater, saline water, sediment and any treatment chemicals. Identify whether the bearing remains immersed or alternates between wet and dry service. A radial-gate trunnion bronze bushing also needs load, housing support and alignment information. Copper-alloy composition and lubricant formulation are separate procurement requirements.
Assembly requirements
Graphite-plugged copper-alloy material is not automatically suitable for prolonged underwater duty. Some copper alloys contain lead; do not assume lead-free or drinking-water approval. Water-lubricated turbine main-shaft bearings are a separate bearing category and are outside this gate-linkage enquiry.
Compare the specified alloy with our brass and bronze grade information. Send a required grade or standard explicitly; similar alloy names do not establish automatic equivalence.

What to send for a quotation
- Gate type, part drawing and assembly or trunnion arrangement
- Static and dynamic loads, operating angle and movement frequency
- Water chemistry, sediment, immersion depth and wet-dry exposure
- Breakaway torque requirement, shaft coating and mating materials
- Required environmental documentation, inspection plan and quantity
We review drawings or samples before confirming material, dimensions, availability and lead time. Agree first-article and inspection requirements at the enquiry stage so both sides use the same acceptance criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Can a graphite-bronze bushing be used underwater?
Only after the specified alloy, lubricant and counterface have been reviewed for the water and operating duty. A generic dry-running rating does not establish immersed performance.
Can you quote a wicket-gate linkage bushing?
Yes, as a drawing-based enquiry. Provide the precise linkage position, loads, motion, immersion conditions and required material documentation before quotation.
Do you claim hydropower or drinking-water certification?
No certification is implied by this application page. State the project’s approval and testing requirements so their availability can be checked before an order.
