C86300 Graphite-Plugged Wear Plates for Stamping-Die Heel Guides

For a C86300 graphite-plugged wear plate in a stamping-die heel guide, specify the base alloy and solid lubricant separately, then check the actual overlap area throughout the loaded stroke. Total plate area and press tonnage do not establish heel-guide pressure. Partial engagement, eccentric reaction and the mounting pocket can govern the replacement drawing.

This guide covers flat replaceable guide faces that react lateral die forces. It complements the BONIU wear-plate product page with a stroke-position load analysis. It does not assign C86300 to every die, declare interchangeability with a branded plate or confirm that BONIU stocks this exact assembly.

Identify C86300 independently of the plug formulation

Concast identifies C86300 as a manganese-bronze casting alloy. Its selected composition ranges include 60–66% copper, 22–28% zinc, 5–7.5% aluminium, 2.5–5% manganese and 2–4% iron. The producer sheet contains further limits and footnotes that remain part of any full comparison.

[1]

Despite the commercial bronze name, the specified zinc content matters when comparing it with another copper alloy. “500#”, “JDB” and “self-lubricating bronze” do not replace an exact base-metal specification, product standard and delivery condition.

The plug system needs its own identity: filler composition, binder or impregnation where applicable, pattern, depth, retention and any initial lubrication. A base-alloy material report does not verify the embedded lubricant or the finished plate’s allowable duty.

Use branded catalogues to understand that different engineered systems exist. Request approval for any change to the original base alloy, lubricant or layout. Do not copy another manufacturer’s maximum pressure, temperature or maintenance claims into a BONIU purchase specification.

Evaluate the smallest loaded overlap, not the biggest outline

Consider an illustrative engineering example: a 100 × 80 mm plate carrying a 30 kN heel-guide reaction. If its entire outline were uniformly loaded, the nominal pressure would be 30,000 / 8,000 = 3.75 MPa. At an early loaded stroke position, suppose only 25 × 80 mm overlaps the mating heel. The same reaction divided by that area is 15 MPa—four times the full-outline result.

These are assumed inputs and average-pressure calculations, not allowable loads. They do not include holes, local deflection, edge contact or nonuniform pressure. The 30 kN guide reaction must come from the die load path; it cannot be substituted with the press’s rated tonnage.

Prepare a stroke-position contact map

Onset of lateral forming loadReaction, moment, engaged length and widthA large reaction can coincide with a small contact footprint.
Maximum working engagementReaction distribution, plate/pocket stiffness and alignmentFull outline overlap still does not guarantee uniform loading.
Return and releaseReverse reaction, sliding travel and debris pathThe loaded face and contamination route can change with stroke.

For an eccentric reaction, also provide the force application point and moment relative to the guide face. A scalar average cannot resolve a tilted pressure distribution. Review whether the heel geometry, pocket support or guide spacing needs correction before selecting a different alloy.

Place lubrication features against the real sliding tracks

Overlay the mating face at the loaded stroke positions on the plug drawing. Confirm which tracks cross lubricant features and which remain near an edge or fastener recess. A global plug-area percentage does not prove that a short, repeatedly loaded path receives the intended lubrication.

Check remaining metal around plugs and fixing holes, including the ligament to the edge and to adjacent pockets. Do not subtract plug area and assume the resulting metal stress is a validated capacity model; load sharing depends on the actual construction. Ask the plate supplier to review the combined pattern and duty.

DME’s FAQ directs purchasers to its engineering team for insert locations before drilling a specific self-lubricating plate.

Apply that product-specific approach to a replacement enquiry: obtain an approved plug and hole map rather than drilling from a photograph.

Inspect pocket support, counterface and contamination

Define the thickness datum, backing-face flatness, pocket depth and shim arrangement. A warped or unsupported pocket can bend the plate and move the contact towards an edge. Confirm screw-head recess, fixing method and the wear allowance needed to keep metal fasteners clear of the moving face.

Specify the mating steel grade, hardness, finish and any coating using the selected bearing supplier’s requirements. Inspect burrs, scoring, embedded particles and local high spots. A harder plate cannot compensate for a misaligned heel or damaged counterface.

State stroke, cycles per minute, dwell under load, impact, temperature and exposure to wash fluids, stamping lubricant and debris. Confirm whether initial lubricant is required or permitted for the chosen plug formulation. Plan access for inspection and debris removal; embedded graphite does not establish a cleanroom-compatible or maintenance-free assembly.

Agree dimensional acceptance and first-article checks before production: plate thickness map, hole positions, plug layout, mounting fit and contact pattern under the approved assembly procedure. Keep the die maker’s limits for guide clearance and replacement wear on the drawing.

Frequently asked questions

Is every graphite-plugged plate C86300?

No. The base may be a different brass, tin bronze or aluminium bronze. Specify the required alloy and the embedded lubricant separately.

Can the press tonnage be divided by the plate area?

The relevant force is the heel-guide reaction at the evaluated stroke position. It must come from the die load path and eccentric moments, rather than the total press capacity.

Can mounting holes be drilled through any unused space?

Check the plug map, remaining ligaments, edge distances and screw-head recesses first. Obtain an approved drawing revision before machining the plate.

Will graphite plugs eliminate all maintenance?

No universal interval follows from the presence of plugs. Inspect alignment, counterface condition, debris, fastener recess and wear against the die maker’s maintenance criteria.

Request a drawing review

Send the plate and die-section drawings, required alloy and standard, lubricant specification, plug and fixing-hole map, pocket dimensions, counterface details, lateral forces and moments by stroke position, minimum loaded overlap, cycle conditions, wear allowance, quantity and inspection needs.

Send your drawing for review or email sales@boniubushing.com. BONIU reviews manufacturing feasibility, material availability, documentation and quotation scope for the particular enquiry. This guide does not confirm stock, a certified material batch or approval for a named machine.
