Graphite Guide Bushings for Stamping Dies
Solutions / Stamping dies and press tooling
Graphite guide bushings for stamping dies support sliding guidance where a copper-alloy bearing with solid-lubricant inserts is specified. BONIU BEARING reviews straight and flanged die-guide bushings to customer drawings. Define the guide post, working stroke, side load and alignment requirement before selecting the sleeve and fit.
Press tooling creates a guidance problem that differs from a loaded pivot. Die alignment, stroke reversal and uneven side loads influence the contact pattern. A guide-post sleeve should not be sized from the nominal diameter alone or expected to correct a misaligned die set.
Application positions and bearing choices
| Position | Product family to review | Critical enquiry details |
|---|---|---|
| Die-set guide post | Graphite-plugged straight bushing | Post diameter, guide engagement and installed bore requirement |
| Progressive-die guidance | Drawing-based straight or flanged guide | Stroke, working clearance, load direction and contamination |
| Located guide sleeve | Flanged graphite-plugged bushing | Flange thickness, locating shoulder and fixing method |
| Press-mechanism axial contact | Thrust washer as a separate component | Axial force, contact area and counterface condition |
Material, fit and operating conditions
For a bronze guide-post bushing for a die set, consider the pin and sleeve as a pair. Confirm post hardness, finish and alignment. Ensure the working travel reaches the intended lubricated surface and provide the plug pattern if the design controls it. Punching force is not automatically the radial load carried by each guide; the assembly load path must be identified.
Assembly requirements
A flanged oilless bushing for a stamping press must have its retention and side loading checked. Precision guidance demands evaluation of the assembled system, including the posts, plates and mounting bores. No positioning accuracy or service-life improvement is implied solely by changing the bushing material.
Compare the specified alloy with our brass and bronze grade information. Send a required grade or standard explicitly; similar alloy names do not establish automatic equivalence.

What to send for a quotation
- Die-guide drawing, mounting arrangement and required working clearance
- Post material, hardness, finish and straightness
- Stroke, strokes per minute, guide engagement and lateral load
- Die temperature, stamping debris and lubrication restrictions
- Copper-alloy and plug requirements, quantity and drawing revision
We review drawings or samples before confirming material, dimensions, availability and lead time. Agree first-article and inspection requirements at the enquiry stage so both sides use the same acceptance criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Can graphite-plugged bushings replace ball guide cages in a die set?
A plain bushing and a rolling guide differ in friction, clearance, stiffness and travel behaviour. Review the entire guide system rather than treating the outside dimensions as proof of interchangeability.
Can you produce a custom die-guide flange?
We review flange diameter, thickness, shoulder and any fixing features from a drawing. Required fits and inspection points are confirmed before quotation.
What causes uneven guide-bushing wear?
Possible causes include misaligned posts, side loading, damaged surfaces and debris. Share the wear pattern and assembly measurements before changing the alloy.
